Swedish Massage

Swedish massage is a system of therapeutic, manual manipulations of the body's soft tissues (muscles, tendons, ligaments, and fascia) for the purpose of enhancing circulation to restore or maintain health and overall well being. Increased circulation aids in the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to all cells in the body and cleanses the body's tissues of cellular metabolic waste. Swedish massage also relaxes tense or spastic muscles, increases joint range of motion, reduces the recovery time from physical injuries, soothes and sedates the nervous system, increases respiration, reduces swelling from the accumulation of fluid in the extremities, and calms and soothes both emotional and physical stress. Swedish massage also assists in the removal of toxins from the body’s tissues. There are five types of strokes in Swedish massage that can and should be applied in a variety of ways.  These strokes are: effleurage, petrissage, friction, tapotement, and compression.

An effective therapy which helps in overall well being, Swedish massage is not only relaxing but invigorating as well.

Hawaiian Lomi-Lomi Massage

Lomi Lomi is an ancient Hawaiian healing massage. Lomi Lomi is more relaxing than Swedish massage, yet it is as effective as deep tissue massage.

Deep Tissue Massage

Deep tissue massage is a corrective bodywork modality focusing on the deeper layers of muscles within our bodies.  In a deep tissue massage the superficial layers of muscles will first be given an overall warm-up and then a stronger pressure will be applied gradually combined with a variety of techniques to the targeted underlying (deep) muscles. It is very effective at releasing chronic patterns of tension in the body, breaking up adhesions (knots), breaking muscle spasms, elongating shortened muscle fibers, addressing and eliminating scar tissue, increasing range of motion, correcting postural issues and imbalances, and improving the range of motion. Some people experience discomfort during parts of a deep tissue massage and it is not uncommon to experience some degree of soreness for 24-36 hours after a deep tissue massage.  Following this period of "soreness" a notable improvement is almost always experienced.  Remember, as a client, you always have control over your session and can at any time ask for the amount of pressure to be adjusted in being applied to your body.

Athletic Performance Massage

Athletic Performance Massage is a very specific type of bodywork utilized most frequently by true athletes who demand and expect optimal performance from their bodies at all times. Athletic Performance Massage is built upon the principles of the physiology of muscle function and the kinesiology of movement.  More specifically sports massage addresses particular injuries that athletes in particular sports tend to suffer from.  It is commonly used both pre and post event. Athletic Performance Massage is done vigorously in a very stimulating manner and is excellent for complementing athletic conditioning and development.

Prenatal/Pregnancy Massage

Prenatal Massage is a form of therapeutic bodywork that is geared to meet the unique needs of the pregnant woman.  Promoting better function of muscles and joints, prenatal massage also improves circulation and overall body tone.  Additionally, prenatal massage decreases mental and physical fatigue as well.

Mutually beneficial, by having regular prenatal massage therapy, mothers become more relaxed; thus allowing the new life inside to be nourished. Prenatal massage is usually begun during the 2nd and/or 3rd trimesters of pregnancy.  While lying on her side, a pregnant woman can be massaged on her side and in a semi-reclining position and/or on your back properly bolstered with pillows.  With low lighting and soft music, prenatal massage is performed via gentle massage strokes over the back and entire body.

Helping to relieve sciatic nerve pain and multiple other conditions experienced during pregnancy, prenatal massage is an effective therapy for helping to calm, and promote overall wellbeing.

Medical Massage/Rehabilitative Massage

Medical Massage/Rehabilitative Massage is a specialized type of massage aimed at helping a client recover from an injury, surgery, or ongoing medical treatment such as radiation/chemotherapy.  Commonly the massage therapist will work in conjunction with a physician, physical therapist or other health care provider.  The massage will address the entire body paying very specific, focused attention to the medical needs of the client.

Trigger Point Therapy/Ischemic Compression Technique

Trigger point therapy is a bodywork technique that involves the applying of pressure to tender muscle tissue in order to relieve pain and dysfunction in other parts of the body. Pressure is applied to tissue from lack of blood and oxygen, followed by an increase blood flow to the area once pressure is released.  This technique is applied by digital pressure, elbow pressure, with a tool, or with a pincer technique.   Applied pressure is gradually increased from 20 seconds to 60 seconds.   It is tender and uncomfortable at first but soon followed by relief.  Sometimes massage and trigger point therapy are performed together.

Shiatsu/Acupressure

Shiatsu in Japanese literally translates to "finger pressure" and it is an ancient form of healing in Eastern history that dates back approximately 4,500 years. Traditional, Five Element Shiatsu is practiced on a mat on the floor and the client is fully clothed (in loose clothing).  A session will involve stretching to open up blocked meridians and free Qi (energy) range of motion to optimize the flow of Qi, and palm and thumb work along various meridians.

Five element Shiatsu is the treatment of the human body, mind, and spirit, including the electromagnetic or energetic field which surrounds, infuses, and brings the body to life, by pressure and/or manipulation. It is a focused, fluid, dynamic form that uses the relationship and character of the Five Elements as the structure by which energy can be assessed and treatment devised. It uses the premise that the body and person are one whole.  Nothing can be isolated, removed, or treated without affecting the balance of the whole.  The Five Element Shiatsu practioner looks for a pattern within the deficiencies and excess conditions of the meridians and relates symptoms to the 12 meridian-organ systems.
